October 13, 1938 - July 12, 2022
Gerald "Jerry" Niel Bignell was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He left this world on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the age of 83 years after a battle with lung cancer.
He was born to Chester and Gertrude Bignell October 13, 1938 and lived at a farm northwest of Stettler. He attended a one room school (uphill both ways we were told) until the age of 15 when he decided he was done with that and was heading off to work. He began his working career at the Auction Mart in Stettler. He worked trucking when his children were young and had a successful hoof trimming business for many years where he loved to travel all over Alberta and visit with all his customers. He helped out at Shuckburgh Farms for many years and returned to the auction mart where he worked until December 2021 when he was diagnosed with cancer.
Jerry met his wife Annabelle Reinbold at a barn dance and they were smitten. They shared a love of visiting, travelling and dancing. They married January 14, 1961 and had 3 children Bradley, Darrell and Brenda. Jerry loved his children but his 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He never failed to spoil, give advice, help, and never-ending love.
Jerry was competitive and a very good baseball player and bowler for a good part of his life. Jerry and Annabelle were part of the old-time dance club in Stettler and they travelled all across Alberta and into the states dancing and visiting.
Jerry had a true love of cattle and horses and his favourite place on earth was sitting on the front porch of his farm house north of Stettler. He lived there for 41 years until his granddaughter purchased the farm when he was 82 years old. He was beyond happy that his favourite place would stay in the family.
There will be a hole in the hearts of everyone that knew Jerry. His jokes and love for life will be missed forever. Jerry is survived by his wife Annabelle, children Bradley Bignell (Marisa Chavez) and Brad's son Steven, Darrell (Sharon) Bignell and their children Allison (Tyler), Christopher and Nicholas, Brenda (Melvin) Barkley and their children Melanie and her children Branson, Jordan and Rylee, Melissa (Dillon) and their children Archer, Grayden, Vienna, McGuire and Elena, Michael, Michelle (Tanner) and their daughter Charlotte; siblings Kendall (Shirley) Bignell, Donnie Bignell, Sharon Duncan and Dixie Bignell; Annabelle's siblings Marlene Serra, Dianne (Dale) Komishke, David (Brenda) Reinbold, Ken (Marian) Reinbold and Elaine Reinbold; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and a host of dear friends.
Jerry was predeceased by infant brother Lorne, parents Gertrude and Chester, parents in law John and Pauline Reinbold, sister Myra Greig, sister in law Diane Bignell, brother in laws Jim Greig, Lloyd Duncan and John Serra.
