BARCLAY – Gerald Elgie passed away in Stettler, AB on Feb. 13, 2009 at the age of 72 years. He was born in Stettler, March 20, 1936. Gerald went to school at Silver Prairie until 1949 when his family moved south of Nevis, AB and then he attended Union Hall School. He worked on the family farm growing up. He married Mary (North) on Dec. 12, 1959. He began a career in construction in Red Deer, AB until they moved to Calgary, AB where he continued building office buildings, malls and the Calgary Tower. The family moved back to Erskine, AB in 1974, where he started his own construction business. Gerald enjoyed playing cards, going camping and fishing and travelled all through Alberta pursuing these passions. He loved animals and had Limousin cattle. Gerald and his family built a house on an acreage south of Erskine in 1979. He continued to have cattle, but also added chickens, horses, miniature horses, llamas and a donkey to his farm. Gerald is survived by his wife Mary (North); two daughters Lorraine (Larry) Ortman and Kathy (Daniel) Knapp; five grandchildren: Justene, Coraley and Madison Ortman, Tyson and Julie Knapp; brothers Dale (Carole) Barclay and Dave (Dianna) Barclay; sister Linda (Dan) Chapman; sisters-in-law: Lila (Casey) Greebe, Mila Barclay, Helen (John) Anderson and Louise Robinson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Harry and Evelyn Barclay; father and mother-in-law Ted and Margaret North; brothers Arnold and John Barclay; and sister Donna Stevens. A funeral service was held at the Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Karl Faltin officiating. Burial took place at Lake View Cemetery. Family and friends gathered in the Heartland Fellowship Hall for a time of sharing and refreshments prepared and served by the Union Hall Ladies.
