George Hanson

April 29, 2008

HANSON – George Hanson was the only child born to Dora Holden and Frank Hanson on March 30, 1924 in Winnipeg, MB. When George was three years of age, his parents married. George grew up at Monitor, AB on his parent’s farm. His father was a very difficult man throughout George's growing up years. His mother was very loving and nurturing. After George left home, he did odd jobs for neighbours, doing harvesting, hauling cattle, grain and various other jobs. In 1941, George spent a couple of years working in the lumber camps at Rocky Mountain House, AB. George Hanson and Ruth Wiens spent a number of years corresponding before they married on July 17, 1954 at Hythe, AB. George and Ruth settled south of Consort on a farm where their five daughters were born, Sheila, Lil, Brenda, Sandra, and Barbara. Brenda and Sandra died as infants. George and Ruth worked hard on the farm providing for their family. They later moved to Lacombe and farmed there for a couple of years, then moved to a farm at Stettler. In 1974, George and Ruth retired from farming and settled in the town of Ponoka, AB, where George took ownership of a tire shop in Bashaw (George's Tire and Repair). He also did jobs as janitor of a school in Ponoka, and construction at the Hobbema Reserve. George and Ruth later moved to the hamlet of Erskine, AB, until Ruth's passing in February 2000. George moved around the central Alberta area during a time that was very difficult for him after the loss of Ruth. He resided at the Lacombe Lodge at the time of his passing on April 29, 2008. George was predeceased by his wife, Ruth and infant daughters Brenda and Sandra. George leaves to mourn his three daughters: Sheila (Wayne) Martin, Lil (Bill) Wingrove and Barb (Richard) Creighton; four grandchildren: Wes Bachmier, Wanda (Darren) Neihaus, Elaine (Colin) Reimer, Ken (Joanne) Wingrove; six great-grandchildren: Devin, Paige, Cameron, Shelby, Alison and Hayden; numerous good friends and acquaintances. Burial took place at the Butte Cemetery, near Consort, AB on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. A celebration of George’s life followed at the Stettler Funeral Home, Stettler, AB with Rev. Bob Tattrie officiating. Mrs. Lavon Tattrie played the piano for the congregational hymns and for the musical tribute “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” sung by Rev. and Mrs. Tattrie. Memories were given by George’s daughters. A time of fellowship followed. If desired, memorial tributes may be made to the Gideon’s or a charity of donor’s choice.
