Francis Albert (Al)

Sept. 12, 1917 - Feb. 17, 2011

Al passed away peacefully in his 94th year in Stettler, Alberta. Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Al spent his younger years as an aviation mechanic for the RCAF, settling in Calgary where he married Dolly in 1944. They arrived in Stettler in 1950 where Al worked for the gas company, BA and Gulf Oil. Al and Dolly spent many happy years raising their family of five, square dancing and "camping" in their motor home. Predeceased by his first wife Mae and unborn child; his mother Catherine; sister Florence and half siblings Fordie, Hector, Pat, Etta, Alfred, and Regina. After 66 years of marriage, Al leaves his devoted wife Dolly, children Patti Nicoll (Lorne) and grandson Adam of Sherwood Park; Gail Anastasi (Art) of Red Deer and granddaughters Amy Buckman (Chris) and Jennifer Ogilvie; Faye Chinn (Frank) of Calgary and grandchildren Matt Chinn, Claire Selebay (Mark) and Chrissy Cruickshank (Dave); Gilbert Voz of Sparwood, BC; and Carol Short (John) of Surrey, BC and grandchildren Michael Short (Laura) and Suzanne Cyr (Ryan). Also left to cherish Great Grandpa's memory are Logan Cyr, Garrett Selebay, Drew Cruickshank and Ruby and Evan Buckman. Carrying on Great Grandpa's name are Drew, and Michael and Laura's son expected in June. The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Stettler Hospital for their compassionate care during Al's last days. A Celebration of Life took place at the Stettler Funeral Home, 4707-70th St. Stettler, AB, on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Debbie Stockdale of the Stettler United Church officiating. Family friend Linda Spokes played the organ as prelude. Words of Remembrance were offered by daughter Faye Chinn as well as Al's beloved grandchildren. A poem by Gilbert Voz was read. Honorary pallbearers were Taffy Jones, Hans Cluver, Wilbert Jestin, Matt Chinn, Mike Short, Adam Nicoll. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #59 and Al's grandson Matt Chinn performed the Last Post tribute. Following the service family and friends gathered together in the reception center of the Stettler Funeral Home for a time of sharing food and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Al's memory may be made to STARS, The Canadian Cancer Society, MS Society of Alberta or the Stettler Food Bank and would be greatly appreciated.
