Evelyn Dorothy Samuel passed away January 27th, 2014 at the age of ninety. She was born at home on a farm five miles north of Gadsby, Alberta, to Albert and Elizabeth (Nuhn) Kruger. The oldest pictures of her on the farm show her holding a cat, and she kept a cat until her very last days. After school in Gadsby she attended Normal school and obtained a certificate in Education at the University of Alberta.
After graduating she taught at several small country schools of the “little red school house” type, including Halkirk and De Winton, an experience which she greatly enjoyed. In 1948 she married Phillip Samuel and they returned to farm on the original Kruger homestead where she was born. When her children were older, she returned to teaching at Gadsby School. Later, after moving to nearby Stettler, she taught for several years at Erskine. Evelyn’s teaching life was extremely important to her. She maintained friendships with many ex-colleagues and students over the years. Evelyn was particularly welcoming to younger teachers in the profession. Evelyn was predeceased by her brother Jim, husband Phillip Samuel, and second husband, Peter Van Buggenum. She is survived by sons David Samuel (Patty) and Murray Samuel (Jane), brother-in-law William Hayden Samuel, and her grandchildren, Lewis, Lindsay, Elena, Catherine and Alison. There will be a memorial gathering announced and will take place during the summer of 2014 at the Gadsby Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy and in loving memory of Evelyn, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in care of
