SAYCE – Eunice Gertrude (Dykstra) died peacefully in her sleep in the Pine Ridge Care Centre, Nov. 16, 2008. She lived 90 years, 3 months and 5 days. Eunice was born Aug. 11, 1918 on the Peterson farm two miles north of Stettler to Edna (Houghton) and Robert Dykstra, the fourth of six children. Her early years were spent in the Silver Prairie and Skybo districts. She attended Pilot Knob and Behrens School. In 1939 she married George Sayce. Their family of four girls started arriving in 1941 with Marilyn followed by Gloria, then Gail and Faye. In 1952 they purchased their own farm in the Pilot Knob District. Eunice and George worked as a team to build their farm and raise their four daughters. Eunice loved caring for her cows and enjoyed her horse and other farm animals, loved gardening, cooking and baking. She loved the family gatherings for birthdays and holidays, and the family reunions. She belonged to the Pilot Knob Ladies Club, Bar Harbour Ladies Club, and Pilot Knob Community Association. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Pink Ladies. Eunice was an active member of her church, frequently hosting dinners for members and visiting Pastors. After retiring from farming, George and Eunice remained on the farm where they cultivated beautiful flower and vegetable gardens enjoyed by all who passed by. In 1997 they moved to Stettler, AB where Eunice continued to enjoy gardening, cooking, baking and volunteering. Predeceased by her beloved husband George; daughter Marilyn LaRose; father Robert Dykstra; mother Edna Lake; stepfather John Lake; sisters, Myrtle Dykstra, Georgia Savage, Pearl Nelson; brothers-in-law, John Savage, Denis Harvey, Frank Nelson; sister-in-law Myrtle (Ken) LaMarsh; brothers-in-law, Sid (Marj) Sayce and Don Sayce. Survived by daughters, Gloria (Bob) MacKenzie, Gail (Rick) Baron and Faye Birrell; son-in-law Paul LaRose; grandchildren, Darren (Deb) LaRose, Darla (Darrell) Rairdan, Blaine Thauberger (Debbie), Tammy Lepard (Carl), Melanie Metzger, Sharla (Dick) Berreth, and Shiana Birrell (Quinn); great-grandchildren, Rick LaRose (Phatchanee), Rob LaRose, Kali LaRose, Laine and Koltyn Parsons, Dustyn Rairdan (Jennifer), DJ and Danie Rairdan, Rhylah-Ann Thauberger, Nikita Lepard (Adrian), Michelle Lepard, Maverick Metzger, Logan, Owen, Cooper and Garrett Berreth; sister Florence Harvey of Kamloops, B.C.; brother Arnold (Pauline) Dykstra of Vernon, B.C.; sister-in-law Margaret Sayce of Newton, B.C.; brother-in-law Vic (Betty) Sayce of Sumas, WA, U.S.A.; uncle Charles (Jean) Houghton and aunt Lila Porter, both in the U.S.A.; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. A funeral service was held in The Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home, Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, with Pastor Warren Kay of Lacombe, AB, officiating.
