BATES

Mom was born in Delia, Alberta to Flora and Jess Dechenne. She grew up in the Delia and Wetaskiwin areas graduating from high school in Duhamel. She worked as a nurse's aid at the Craigmyle Hospital. After meeting James Cecil Bates they were married April 2, 1942 in Vancouver B.C. They resided in Campell River for several years while based in the army. During this time their son James Vernon was born. It was soon back home to the Prairies to settle into life on the farm in the Craigmyle area. Shortly after the move back a daughter Carol Ann was born. Mom loved life on the farm and she was active in all aspects of farm life, calving & harvest time being her favorite. Gardening was her passion, she enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends and playing cards for hours. They farmed until the time of Dad's passing in 1979. Mom then moved to Stettler and settled into her own home. Although not the life she was used to, she soon settled in. Gardening was still a passion as well as baking and cooking, nothing was as good as Mom's. Many will attest to her frozen Nanaimo bars, cookies, pizza buns and chocolate cake superb to no other. Mom also enjoyed bowling and floor curling where she met many new acquaintances. Her life revolved around her family. Survived by son Jim (Shirley) Bates of Delia; daughter Carol (Dale) Nixon of Stettler; 6 grandchildren: Stacey (Frank) Massner, Becky (Denver) Schmelke, Shannon Forrester (Troy), Noel Nixon (Martyne), Aaron Nixon (Tara), Ryan Nixon (Marsha); 14 great grandchildren: Dylan, Jaxon, Tamara (Peter), Kimberley, Mark, Kayde, Baylee, Cole, Adam, Jamie, Jaden, Tristen, Emma and Connor; sister Doris Johnson (Fred); special friends the Bakker family; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Predeceased by her parents Flora and Jess; husband Cecil; son in law Dennis Bienvenue and brother Allan. We thank you Mom for the special mom you have been to us and for being our best friend. You have taught us great values, you always put everyone before yourself, and we appreciate the sacrifices you've made for us. We love you Mom. A memorial service was held at Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home, Stettler, Alberta with Dale Nixon officiating. Doug McKay played for the hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden." Several family members did readings and gave special memories of their Grandma. Her grandchildren: Stacey Massner, Becky Schmelke, Shannon Forrester, Noel Nixon, Aaron Nixon and Ryan Nixon were Honorary Pallbearers. Edith will be laid to rest in Craigmyle Cemetery with her husband Cecil. Following the service family and friends gathered for time of sharing and a luncheon by Brenda's Country Catering.
