Doreen Ruth Unruh

February 6, 2019

January 16, 1936 - February 6, 2019
Doreen Ruth Reimer Unruh was born to Dave L. & Tina Reimer on January 16, 1936, at Swalwell, AB.

On February 6, 2019, the angels came in the early morning hours to take her home. We had just celebrated her 83rd birthday.

Doreen had a happy childhood on the family farm with two brothers and two sisters. She said the best part of school was baseball. She gave her heart to God while she was walking home from school, later saying her burden, which felt just like the rock she saw beside the road, had rolled away and she felt forgiven. Doreen was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on December 6, 1948, by Minister John M. Penner at Linden. She remained faithful to the Lord all her life.

Doreen fell in love with the neighbor boy, Dewey Unruh. They were united in marriage on June 17, 1956, beginning a lifetime of love and service which lasted over 62 years. They spent that first winter at Little Red River Mission among the First Nations. Other places of service included the Sunchild Mission at Rocky Mountain House and mission work in India. They moved to Stettler in 1966 to help lead the young congregation. She faithfully supported Dewey in his Ministry, both going along with him, and spending many days at home choring while he was gone for revival meetings. Life had its ups and downs for her. She spent six months in the TB Sanitorium, in Calgary, early in their marriage. She lived with the challenges of diabetes and later, heart disease. Two sons were welcomed into their home, Douglas Walter, and Ray David. We remember Mom as a lover of nature and outdoor life. She liked family camping and outdoor cooking. She loved to sing, and birds and flowers were an important part of her life.

They did a lot of traveling, but the best part always was coming back Home. Doreen's home the last months of her life was Heritage House, where she was lovingly cared for. The nurses there commented on the special bond she and Dewey shared.

Doreen was lovingly mourned by her husband, Dewey, until his passing the next morning.

Lovingly remembered by their children, Doug and friend Joleen, Innisfail, AB, Ray & Connie; grandchildren: Travis & Pollyanna, Tyler & Carol, Carson, and Chelsey, all of Stettler, AB; one great-grandchild, Ariel, whom she called the "most beautiful baby that's ever been born"

One sister, Joyce & Melvin Klassen, Stettler, AB; two brothers, Denver & Ella, Ken & Norma, Linden, AB Dewey's family: Beulah Isaac, Helen Unruh, Ervie Toews, Selma Unruh, all of Linden, AB, Margaret Fehr, Delisle, SK, and Joann & Elmer Esau, Stettler, AB,

Her many nieces and nephews were very special to them. They opened their home and hearts to numerous people from different walks of life from all over the world.
