Bernie Spelrem

1922 - 2010

Bernie Leslie Spelrem was born June 14, 1922 in Bashaw, Alberta and he passed away on June 12, 2010, two days shy of his 88th birthday. Bernie was one of eight children born to Egil & Laura Spelrem. His childhood years were spent on the family farm in the Calumet area with his brothers and sisters. Bernie met his wife Ivy at a local dance in Ponoka and they dated for 4 - 5 years before they got married on August 26, 1948 in the Wood River Church. They settled in Ponoka where they both worked at the Central Alberta Dairy Pool creamery. Darlene was born in Ponoka while Bernie and Ivy were working for the creamery. Later Bernie quit the creamery and started work for the Alberta Wheat Pool in Keoma, Alberta and he and his family stayed there for three years. Denise was born in Calgary, after that, Bernie, Ivy, Denise, and Darlene moved to Bashaw where Bernie managed the Alberta Wheat Pool elevator. Allan and Patricia were born to Bernie and Ivy during these years in Bashaw. Bernie enjoyed 28 years of retirement before his passing. During his retirement years he could be seen on the golf course, at the curling rink and uptown getting the mail and having coffee. During his time in Bashaw he could often be seen riding around town on his bike stopping to visit with friends along the way. Bernie will be sorely missed by his wife, his children, many grandchildren, great-grand children, his twin sister Bernice Wilkinson, his brother Clare Anderson, his sister Alice Coughlin and a host of other relatives and friends. A Funeral Service was held at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Thursday, June 17th, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Interment followed in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta or to STARS.
