Stettler and District residents were invited to a drop-in beef-on-a-bun supper at the Stetter Agriplex.
The event was put on as part of Volunteer Week and was hosted by Stettler Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Stettler Information and Referral Centre and Stettler Home Support.
National Volunteer Week was kicked off last Friday with the town and county signing proclamations declaring the week across the district. Stettler Information and Referral sponsored popcorn at the Jewel Theatre on Sunday. Executive Director Lorraine Hankins says they donated 200 medium popcorn to moviegoers between the two showings. Hankins says the week has been a wonderful experience to show their appreciation for the thousands of volunteers in the community. Many volunteers often volunteer for more than one thing.
Hankins said the beef on a bun dinner was a tremendous wind-up sort of event to a great week. She noted the drop-in format was chosen due to the dinner taking place during Music Festival and several other events around the community. Hankins says they wanted to make sure people could still attend as a thank you to the community volunteers without pressuring them to commit to the dinner over another event they wanted to attend.
The dinner itself was a joint effort. The beef and some salads were provided by Brenda’s Catering while members of FCSS and other groups provided some of the other items. All of these were provided free of charge.
Diners were also able to enjoy the musical stylings of Wayne and Kent Nixon. The duo played while the guests ate. The use of the dining area and kitchen space was donated by the Ag Society for the event.
County Reeve Larry Clarke spoke at the event on behalf of the county. He thanked the event hosts and congratulated them on their efforts. He spoke about the countless hours, and incredible accomplishments of the volunteers in our community, and the legacy they leave with their effort. He thanked them on behalf of the county for their efforts and stated his appreciation for all they have done over the years.
“You continuously show up to do what you can to enrich our lives through selfless giving,” said Clarke.
