The votes are in, and the village residents have decided overwhelmingly to dissolve the Village of Halkirk into the County of Paintearth.
Results fir the two-day vote were posted on the village office door just before 5 p.m. on Oct 9.
Voting had taken place from 4-8 p.m. at the Halkirk Community Hall on Oct. 8, and from 10-4 p.m. on Oct. 9.
"I think it's great that the vote went basically 100 per cent," said Village Mayor Jan Koeraadt.
"It's a pretty good deal I think ... We still have our community, just different administration, that's all ... It's time to go in a different direction."
51 of the village's approximately 92 eligible voters voiced their opinion on dissolution by taking part in the vote, with 50 indicating for the village to dissolve, and one ballot being spoiled.
The vote was run completely independent of the village or the county by municipal affairs.
With the vote now concluded, and decided, the process will begin at the provincial government level for the dissolution of the village and for its absorption at the county level.
The village will not be left without representation once it folds into the county; The County of Paintearth Division 4 councillor, currently Terry Vockeroth, will represent the village constituents at county council.
As noted at the pre-vote meeting held at the Halkirk Community Hall in September, Municipal Affairs will likely appoint an administrator to assist the village and the county with the transition.
No timeline is in place for the transition to be concluded, but a date of Jan. 1, 2025, has been suggested at previous meetings with municipal affairs.
Despite the vote indicating dissolution, the business of the village continues and regular council meetings will continue monthly until dissolution officially takes place.
The next council meeting is Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.
