The Village of Big Valley is heading into a byelection following the retirement of two councillors.

According to Big Valley chief administrative officer Colleen Mayne, Coun. Clark German and Amber Hoogenberg chose to retire in the days following a Nov. 20 council meeting.

Without the village council having a quorum, Alberta Municipal Affairs has appointed Eugene Soboloewski to step in and serve as the official administrator, in effect replacing council until a by-election can be held.

The nomination deadline for running for council is Jan. 23 at noon, with the by-election set to occur on Feb. 20.

According to Mayne, the first nomination papers were received on Jan. 16.

Dan Houle continues to remain a councillor and will resume his duties once the quorum is restored.

Whoever is elected come the by-election will serve for the remainder of the term until the next election scheduled in the fall of 2025.
