The Town of Stettler council held a short celebration during their June 21 meeting to honour some high-achieving singers.

Rhonda Sylvester and her Gracenotes Honor Choir attended council after their first place win at the provincial music festival where they won first place in the 17 and under category for a choral ensemble.

“I’d like to thank you for representing Stettler with style and class,” Mayor Sean Nolls said during the meeting.

“You guys are representative of what this community can do.”

While the choir did not actually sing for council, a video of their winning performance was played before Mayor Nolls presented the group with a certificate from the town.

Sylvester, who is in her 28th year leading the choir in Stettler, noted that the second place group was also from Stettler.

Community hall and Hub floor refinish

While town administration has budgeted $15,000 for refinishing the Stettler Community Hall dance floor, with a tender coming in well under budget administration has requested council consider adding the Hub to the work as the floor there is in a poor state as well.

“There is no finish left on the floor of the Hub,” said Brad Robbins, the town’s manager of culture and recreation.

Robbins had sought tenders for both the community hall and the Hub noting that the two companies contacted in the community said the work was outside of their scope.

Two bids were ultimately received, one from Caliber Sport Systems, used by Clearview Public Schools, who offed a quote of just under $20,000 for the two facilities with a completion date of Oct. 30, 2022, and one from Craftsman Floors Ltd, used by Christ King School, who offered a quote of around $12,500 for the same work and a completion date of Oct. 29, 2022.

“We’re talking, relatively speaking, apples to apples,” said Robbins, noting that the both bids used similar chemicals and processes.

In a motion put forward by Coun. Cheryl Barros, council approved the staff recommendation to award the contract to Craftsman Floors Ltd.

Stettler Dirt Riders Association

Council has agreed, in conjunction with the County of Stettler, to supply excess road materials to the association so that they may be improve the road into the track.

The decision came out of the June 14 Committee of the Whole meeting in a motion made by Coun. Barros.

The motion also recommended council renew the lease agreement with the association as the land on which the land sits belongs to the town and the current lease has expire.

A request for the town to assist with mowing of the land was denied by council.

The recommendations were moved in a motion by Coun. Travis Randell during the June 21 council meeting.
