Stettler Town Council had a light agenda for its Sept. 5 meeting.

One topic of note for the evening included a look at the plans for the Okoppe Walkway.

The new walkway and gathering area will connect the Okoppe Parking lot to Main Street via the empty lot at 4915 50 St., on the north side of Brenda’s Cozy Cafe.

The three-year project has a budget of $72,000; $60,000 will come from various aspects of the 2023 budget. The project’s planned completion date will coincide with the 35th anniversary of the twining of Stettler with Okoppe Japan.

Coun. Wayne Smith inquired about the exposed brick on the buildings on either side of the space; Graham explained that the plan includes fencing that will cover much of the buildings, and that more could be done later. Coun. Smith motioned to authorize administration to proceed with getting the necessary quotes for concrete work and acquire the necessary fencing, seating, and garbage receptacles. The motion was carried.

Development Officer

Angela Stomoen has been appointed as the Development Officer for the town.

The appointment comes with the vacancy left by Leann Graham’s move into the position of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

Since the appointment is able to be made by administration, the announcement was mostly for information to council.

Coun. Gord Lawlor noted in regard to Stromoen’s new position that “She has proven herself over and over again.”

This sentiment was echoed by other members of council. The motion made by coun. Cheryl Barros to accept as information was passed.

Assistant CAO Steve Gerlitz suggested for the Sept. 12 Meeting of the Whole, since there wasn’t anything on the agenda, it be cancelled. Coun. Barros motioned to approve the cancellation, which was carried.
