Town byelection Oct. 19 and advance poll Oct. 14

Voters in the Town of Stettler head to the polls Oct. 19 as three candidates are vying for the vacant councilor seat on council.

Voters in the Town of Stettler head to the polls Oct. 19 as three candidates are vying for the vacant councilor seat on council.

Trent Cottam, Sherry Larter and Darcy Bachman are seeking the seat left vacant by Dick Richards who became the new mayor after Jim Hunter resigned in July to become a provincial court judge.

Voters can cast their ballots on Oct. 19 at Stettler Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Before that, an advance poll has been scheduled for Oct. 14 at Town of Stettler office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Every eligible voter will be required to sign a document to declare that he or she is eligible to vote,” said returning officer Greg Switenky who serves as the town’s assistant chief administrative officer.

Eligible voters must be at least 18 years of age, be a Canadian citizen and be a resident of the Town of Stettler for six consecutive months prior to election day.

Election officers will also take ballots to electors who because of physical incapacity, are unable to attend the voting station or at advanced voting station to vote.

Polling stations will also be located at Stettler Health Centre hospital, auxiliary hospital, the hospital nursing home, and seniors’ lodges of Willow Creek, Heart Haven and Paragon Place.

“Every vote is precious and we don’t want to waste the opportunity for people to vote,” said Switenky.

Both the new councilor and Mayor Richards will serve the balance of the three-year term that expires in October 2010.
