When Ms. Erin Prehn’s Grade 6 class at Stettler Elementary School read an article in the Stettler Independent about the Stettler Community Recreation Track being renewed, they wanted to find a way they could help support the project.

The Grade 6 class often takes time to read newspaper articles of interest from the local Stettler Independent newspaper, incorporating current events and reading with a purpose and literacy focus.

In the March 6th, 2019 issue of the Independent, they read an article pertaining to the renewing of the Stettler community track.

They learned about its history in the 1991 Alberta Summer Games, its need for a new surface, and the collaboration between Clearview Public Schools, the Town of Stettler, the County of Stettler and other groups to help make it happen.

The class often discusses being leaders and contributing positively to their school, community, province, and globe.

Considering they often use the track for physical education, Terry Fox Runs, and track meets, they wanted to support the project. After some discussion, the Grade 6 students decided to donate their classroom bottle money ($100).

Ms. Prehn said, “We chose to donate our money towards the refurbishment of our track because it is something that we know all students can use and enjoy for many years forward. I really do think that this is going to do quite a lot for our students and community because we can take pride in having a great track!”

With a renewed track surface Stettler will be able to once again host track and field tournaments, including the opportunity to bring in people that may be interested in living in Stettler and the great surrounding communities.

All members of our communities (and students!) will be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle on a high-quality, rubberized running and walking surface for over the next 20 years, if not longer.

As the resurfacing project is being planned for the summer or fall of 2019, any groups, individuals, or companies interested in helping to support this initiative and helping to create a lasting benefit for the Town of Stettler and County of Stettler, can please contact Peter Neale (associate superintendent, Clearview) at 403-742-3331 or by email at pneale@clearview.ab.ca.

Any financial help is appreciate, and charitable donation receipts are available for donations at or over $25.

Corporate or service group sponsorship opportunities are available and will be considered on an individual basis (see http://bit.ly/CSDTrack for sponsorship opportunities).
