The Heartland Youth Center (HYC) was a place of celebration the evening of March 20 as the venerable and long-standing community organization held its annual general meeting and recognition night.
Around 50 people filled the gymnasium of the HYC facility, with guests including parents, town representatives, volunteers, and, of course, the youth.
The meeting began shortly after 7 p.m., called to order by board chair Amanda Churchill.
Churchill and HYC executive director Winnie Bissett both provided reports on the centre and its programming, which was followed by a presentation by the Boys and Girls Club of Stettler.
A highlight of Bissett’s report was HYC membership. Members in the centre jumped to 353 in 2022 from 273 the year prior. The Rainbows program also saw a jump, to 51 participants from 27.
Presentations by the Stettler Big Brothers, Big Sisters program and the Rainbows program also took place before the awards ceremony.
During the presentation of the 2022 awards, Superfluity and the Stettler Car Club were both recognized as Corporate Cares supporters.
A long-term Big Brother match, Ralph Kamlah, was presented the Marg Forrester Memorial Award which recognizes outstanding adult volunteer contributions to HYC programming.
The HYC Hall of Fame Award, which is not awarded every year, was presented to long-time board member and supporter of the HYC, Kim Weaver.
Three staff members were recognized for long-term service; Pat Wood for five-plus years, Christel Shuckburgh for ten-plus,and Sara Wengryn for 15-plus.
A number of youth were also recognized for their leadership, positivity and kindness.
The meeting, including presentations, lasted just over an hour although those in attendance were invited to remain afterward for coffee and snacks.
