Stettler’s Heartland Youth Centre (HYC) is gearing up for its most significant event of the year, the Awesome Auction and Gala.

The 2023 event will take place Sat, June 3, featuring a steak and lobster dinner, silent auction and dance.

“There’s been great community response,” said HYC executive director Winnie Bissett, speaking about the upcoming fundraiser.

“The theme this year is ‘an evening in the tropics.’”

According to Bissett, the dinner sold out within six weeks, and many in the community have sponsored silent auction prizes.

Keeping with the theme, Bissett says some of the larger prizes up for auction include seven nights at a beachfront property in Belize and tickets to a Beyonce concert, including airfare, in Toronto.

“The support we get is unbelievable,” said Bissett.

In addition to the big-ticket items, Bissett says that there is a good number of items valued around $50 and up so people from all income levels will have the opportunity to bid on items.

While the dance is being run by Stettler-based Heartbeat DJ services, the rest of the event, including setup, teardown, and all the cooking, is being handled by 75 to 80 different volunteers.

Bissett says that volunteers supporting the event include parents and community members, though some of the teens from the centre’s Torch and Keystone club are also going to be helping out as well.

Planning for the event has been underway since March.
