After passing this year’s capital budget during their February 6th meeting, town councillors then discussed the top five priorities in the 2018 Strategic Plan.

C.A.O. Greg Switenky said of the process, “These top five goals are brought to council twice a year to see how it’s progressing, so we’re able to keep a benchmark on it. Sometimes priorities fall down the list, and other years an emerging item may make it’s way to the top. It doesn’t always mean we will have success, but at least we try to move forward.”

At the top of the list this year are the next phase of renovations to the Stettler Recreation Centre. This involves public consultations to look at the need for an indoor running facility in Stettler, and collaborating with officials in Ponoka for tips on funding opportunities for this type of project.

The second priority is to look at hiring a communications officer. Currently, social media and press releases are handled by staff in the town office. A recommendation has been brought to council to consider budgeting for this position during their March committee of the whole meeting.

The third priority is to look at building a fire fighting training addition onto the current Stettler Fire Hall. The project has already received a $5,000 injection from Superfluity for conceptual design, but is not listed under the Town of Stettler’s Capital Plan. Council would look to the County of Stettler to help them cost-share such a project if they were to proceed.

The fourth priority concerns an economic development plan. The town would first need to research qualified consulting services who could assemble it, and then would send out requests for proposals to get an idea of estimated costs. This is expected to come back to council sometime in May or June for funding consideration.

Finally, the fifth priority on the Strategic Plan is connecting the pathway system. Council will review the Pathways Master Plan to decide which areas of Stettler will be focused on in the coming years.
