The community of Stettler is mourning the loss of former publisher and outstanding community member Aubrey Noel Brown.

Aubrey, 56, passed in Prince Edward Island on July 20, 2018, with his loving family by his side.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Rhonda Brown, his children Buddy Brown, Woody Brown, Claire Brown, as well as brothers Gord Brown (Sandy Vanier), Kevin Brown (Shirley) and his sister Sharon Lloyd.

Aubrey worked for Black Press, owner of Stettler Independent, from 2007 to 2012, and was the publisher at the Independent starting in 2009.

“Aubrey Brown started at the Independent in 2009 and trained under me for the publisher position as I retired in 2010,” said former Independent publisher Marlene Conibear.

“Aubrey was a very personable person and a lot of fun,” added Conibear. “At that time we still had a staff of 15 and did the production for Ponoka News, Rimbey Review as well as Bashaw Star, Castor Advance, (Regional) Weekender and the Stettler Independent. It was a very busy place and a lot of deadlines to manage. Aubrey was a family man and always had a smile to greet you. He certainly was an idea person and thought up many promotions and ads, using lots of colour to get the message across in the newspaper.”

In addition, Aubrey was a director for the Stettler and area Board of Trade.

Aubrey moved to PEI a few years ago but kept in contact with friends and Independent staff in Stettler.

Aubrey was born in Newfoundland, to the late Roderick and Anne (English) Brown. There will be two services for Aubrey. PEI family, friends and acquaintances gathered at the funeral home on Sunday, July 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. Interment to take place in Alberta at a later date. Donations to the Kings County Palliative Care Unit would be appreciated. Ferguson Logan Montague Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.

The Alberta service will be held in Red Deer on July 31 at Sunnybrook United Church at 11 a.m.
