A Stettler man who punched a woman with a closed fist at a bar was given 12 months probation and a conditional discharge.

Brody Anthony Pethick, 28, pleaded guilty, in Stettler provincial court on Oct. 25 to assault.

“I would like to apologize and express my remorse,” Pethick told the court.

His defence told the court that the incident was “out of character” for Pethick, adding that it was a verbal confrontation that escalated.

Crown prosecutor Blair Brandon told the court striking the woman who was a stranger was a “violent act.”

Judge W. A. Skinner said the incident wasn’t a domestic violence incident and he took Pethick’s early guilty plea, his remorse and lack of criminal record into consideration when sentencing.
