Stettler Legion makes several community donations

'It's not our money, it's public money,' Stettler Legion

Members with the Stettler Legion were making the rounds Sept. 25, making donations to some worthwhile causes.

Legion vice-president Ray Cerniuk and member Pat Lattery donated $2,700 to three separate locations, all in support of seniors and health care.

The first stop was at Points West Living, where the pair donated $900 to the Eden Resident Social Committee Fund.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the committee were Points West resident Stan Botsford, facility general manager Amanda Whittmore, recreation coordinator Deirdre Northrop and social committee staff member Amber Hoogenberg.

Following that donation, Cerniuk and Lattery headed over to the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre, where they made the final two stops.

The first stop was at Stettler Hospital's Heritage House, where Cerniuk and Lattery presented a cheque of $900 to Marijke Maltais, Dana Anderson and Doctor Hassan Lackhat to be used for patients.

Finally, they headed over to the facility's acute care wing, where a final $900 cheque was presented to staff members Nimisha Thankachan, Taylor Liske and Jenna Watson, again to be used for patients.

The donated funds come from the Legion's Poppy Fund.

"It's a public trust administered by each branch," said Cerniuk.

"It's not our money; it's public money."

Cerniuk says that getting funds approved for use from the Poppy Fund can be a tedious process as many restrictions are in place to use the funds.

"There's a huge pile of money being tied up in red tape," said Cerniuk.

"There's a whole process for each application."

According to Cerniuk, there is around $90,000 in the Stettler Poppy Fund.

Cerniuk notes that many people donate to the Poppy Fund because they are familiar with it, but if people want to make an impact they can directly donate to the individual Legions.

Without donated funds to the individual Legions, they can't keep the lights on or doors open, Cerniuk said.

The Stettler Legion is open for coffee and conversation most afternoon's at 1 p.m. and holds a weekly meat draw on Saturdays at 5 p.m.
