Atttainable housing has truly arrived in Stettler after the local foundation under Stettler Kinsmen and Kinettes have approved its first application under the Stettler KIN Build program.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Andrew Haley, a young man who has been looking to set up roots in Stettler for the past year to join his family.

“I wouldn’t be able to afford my own house in Stettler.”

“It’s super-difficult to get a down payment and this program is good to support people like me to buy a home here.”

“This is a great opportunity for me and other people to become a homeowner in Stettler.”

Haley’s application was approved prior to the first deadline.

“It’s a starting point,” said Kirk Blake, a member of the selection committee.

“Our first deadline is March 26, but we decided to approve an application early to show the community that this project is for real and to drum up more support.”

Applicants are eligible for up to $35,000 for a down payment under a new home ownership grant for eligible houses in Meadowlands in the Park, with homes about 1,400 square feet with a double-attached garage with a selling price from $330,000 to $350,000.

“Once people see the first house go up, and with the first application approved, I believe more people will consider applying for the grant,” said Blake.

“It isn’t too good to be true.

He notes that more early approvals could be granted, while five applications have been received by mid-March after the program was announced in mid-February.

When financing is approved, the applicant can then enter into a purchase agreement with the builder. Approximately six weeks later, when the house is at lock up and the applicant has satisfied all conditions the grant is applied and ownership is transferred to the applicant.
