After eight months, the hospice suite at Points West Living Stettler has opened its doors once again.

The suite was closed back in November due to a province wide staffing shortage due to the COVID-19 pandemic which affected healthcare and senior’s care centres everywhere.

While the suite at Points West Living was closed, the Stettler Hospice Society was still able to provide services out of Heart Haven Lodge, though “it was not as nice” according to president Maureen Drummond.

“We are very glad that our hospice suite has reopened,” said Drummond.

The suite reopened on June 14 after the extended closure.

“As an organization we understand that this does not meet the commitment that we have made to the citizens of Stettler and area or our funding partners,” wrote Drummond in a press release.

“We remain committed to providing this very important service to Stettler and area. We will continue to ensure all are able to access this care regardless of the ability to use our suite at Points West Living.”

The suite at Points West is leased by Stettler Hospice Society and staffed with a mixture of service partners, including society volunteers, Home Care, and Points West staff.

Funding for the suite is provided through private donation and a small stipend from Alberta Health.

To further support patients requiring hospice care in the community, the Stettler Hospice Society will be introducing a new service into the community called “Hospice at Home.” The service support those who wish to remain at home in their last days and “need that extra little bit of help,” according to Drummond.

The service will be provided as an addition to Home Care, not a replacement for it.
