Stettler holds open house for land annexation proposal

Residents of Stettler had a great opportunity to speak their mind and be heard last week.

The town of Stettler held an open house on May 25, asking for feedback and approval of various plans.

The major plan — annexation of six quarters of land — was the major announcement for the town of Stettler.

The Town of Stettler is looking at annexing six quarters of land from the County. There are four quarters on the west side of town limits, one on the north and one on the south.

According to Leann Graham, Stettler’s director of development and planning, residents who attended the open house at the Stettler Recreation Centre were pleased with what they saw.

“The only issues brought up were clarifications, most of the people who attended were OK with what they saw,” said Graham.

Feedback from the open house and the quizzes supplied will be compiled and brought back to council, where it will receive its bylaw amendment first reading.

It will then be published in the paper for two weeks, then a public hearing will be held by council. Following that, it will be given second and third readings by council.

“There shouldn’t be any issues with it passing through council,” said Graham.

Graham says the purpose of the open house is to provide a transparency between residents and the town.

“I think letting them know what we’re doing and being kind of an open book about what changes we’re proposing for land use is very important,” said Graham.

“It’s an opportunity for them to come to us and discuss potential projects or issues in their neighbourhood.

We want to know what our community members think about proposals like this because this really does guide all development in the entire town.”

Other issues discussed at the open house were minor changes to definitions and wording of certain bylaws.
