Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced late in the day on Jan. 31 that the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre would face an unexpected emergency department closure.

Due to a cited "clinical personnel shortage," the hospital emergency department will be closed temporarily from 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 until 8 a.m. the next morning.

While nursing staff will remain on-site in the emergency department to provide first aid and triage, patients who can be will be referred to alternate hospitals in neighbouring municipalities. If deemed necessary, EMS will be arranged for transport.

Instead of presenting to the emergency department during the closure, those requiring assistance are asked to instead present to facilities in Drumheller, Lacombe, Camrose, or Castor.

In the case of a medical emergency, call 911.

Other services at the facility will not be impacted by the closure.
