This year Stettler Crossfit hosted the seven-year-old Canada Day Fun Run on Friday, July 1 as the weather cooperated with the participants and the sunshine and blue skies made for a good family-fun event.

“The purpose of the Canada Day Fun Run is simply to get entire families out for a fun fitness event,” said CJ Oprea, race director and owner of Crossfit Stettler. “We had people of all levels of fitness come together for a great morning.”

Oprea believes community races are important because they are great way to bring other runners into Stettler’s community as well as giving new runners within the town a safe and fun way to run their first race.

“We chose Canada Day because it’s a day most people are off from work and want to spend the day with family and friends,” said Oprea. “Most people enjoyed the run and thought it was fantastic.”

There were in total 110 runners registered for the fun run with two-year-olds to 70.

“We had a new venue and new course, which everyone really enjoyed,” added Oprea. “The Stettler Kinsmen purchased a new finishing archway for the Stettler Triathlon and other local races and we were very excited to be the first ones to use it and I think it definitely brought some extra excitement to the race.”

Oprea also said that she has always been a huge fan of the kids’ race following the 5 and 10-km run.

“These anxious racers wait so patiently while their parents’ run and then always give 110 per cent with enormous smiles on their faces, it’s a pure joy to watch each athlete cross the finishing line,” said Oprea. “We hope this will continue to be an annual event with a possible half marathon added next year, and we would love to see even more out of town participants next year to this event, and adding that half-marathon might help.”

Crossfit Stettler will also organize the Stettler Triathlon, which is taking place on Sunday, July 17 and Oprea hopes that it will be even successful than the Canada Day Fun Run.
