Stettler County, Big Valley Fire Department host fundraiser for Experiences Canada trip kids

Around $1,000 was raised

Stettler County, Big Valley School and the Big Valley Fire Department held a fundraiser on April 15.

The fundraiser was to help pay for the Experiences Canada kids from Quebec travelling to the region in May.

Previously, students from Big Valley School went to Quebec as part of the exchange program where they were toured around Quebec City and shown many different aspects of Quebec culture.

According to one person helping with the “Car Smash” fundraiser, the plan will be to take the Quebec kids to various places around the region beginning in Banff, but also including the Royal Terrell Museum in Drumheller along with some other activities closer to home.

The fundraiser held on April 15 was a “Car Smash;” people could pay $10 per minute to get out some anger or frustration work out by taking a sledgehammer or other firefighting tool to one of three non-operational vehicles in the training compound located at the Big Valley Fire Hall.

In addition to the smash, a couple of members from the Big Valley Fire Department demonstrated vehicular door removal using the “jaws of life.”

Supporting the event, a number of Stettler County councillors and staff were on hand cooking burgers for those who got hungry from their efforts. The burgers, including a bag of chips and a drink, were by donation.

According to Les Stulberg, one of the Stettler County councillors who attended the event, around $1,000 was raised.
