Many charities have benefited from the Stettler Car Club over the last two-plus decades.
Using the annual drag races and show-and-shine events to raise funds, the volunteers of the local organization have donated over $164,000 back into the community since the year 2000.
“That is only possible by the generosity of the community,” said Car Club president Norm Johnston.
“There are generous people in this town.”
In 2022, the car club took on another project as well, helping out with the inaugural soap-box derby that was held in conjunction with the show-and-shine and parade.
According to Johnston there were some bugs to be worked out for next year, but overall the event was well received by all who participated.
As for the donations back to the community, 2022 was no exception to the generosity of the volunteers with over $14,400 being donated to various charities and supporters of the club.
Recipients this year include the Stettler Hospice Society ($1,000), Heartland Youth Centre ($1,000), Stettler Toy Hamper ($1,000), Stettler Crisis Aid ($1,000), Heartland Victim Services ($1,000), the Stettler Air Cadet squadron ($1,000), The Stettler Turkey Drive run by the Kinette club ($500), the Stettler Food Bank ($1,500), and the Stettler Town and Country Museum ($1,000).
In addition to the above charities, Stettler Minor Hockey Association received $1,0000 as they assisted the club members with the safety barriers, the timing system workers received $1,200 for their time, and Tom Fisher received $200 for providing fire standby services for the drag racing event.
Plans are already under way for 2023 events and more information will be released in the new year.
