Rosebrier Crime Watch spearheads video project for Alberta

Nine new videos help rural Albertans prevent crime

The Alberta Rural Crime Watch Associations have a great new resource available for rural, or any, Albertans.

The Rosebrier Rural Crime Watch Association, with the help of RCMP, a Bashaw videographer, and other community resources has spearheaded a series of modern, up-to-date videos offering serious crime prevention advice.

Tully Johnson, president of the Rosebrier association, said the videos were formally presented during a recent annual general meeting on Feb. 1, and everybody was impressed.

Johnson said videographer Ben Wilson of Bashaw was instrumental in filming, editing and polishing the videos. As well, the Wetaskiwin and Bashaw RCMP detachments committed a lot of time and effort to the video project.

He noted it took a couple of years to complete the videos, as organizers wanted them to be top-notch quality, and reflect the current face of Alberta’s rural community. Johnson had noted that previous videos dating to the 1990s were made before the Internet even existed, so updating was definitely in order.

There are nine videos in total, ranging over a variety of subjects that rural Albertans deal with every day. But Johnson pointed out the videos are useful to any Alberta wishing to reduce their vulnerability to crime. The videos are available on YouTube by searching for Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Association and are only about two to three minutes long each.

The Rosebrier president noted that rural crime watches all over Alberta will be promoting the videos.

One thing Johnson said he learned while making the videos is that rural Alberta isn’t necessarily the quiet, crime-free place it was 30 to 40 years ago. He said nowadays, farmers and acreage owners need to remember not to leave their keys in their vehicles, and to lock up their valuables.

The videos are also available on the rural crime watch website along with a lot of other valuable information: https://www.ruralcrimewatch.ab.ca/.
