Since January, Stettler residents have had the chance to participate in an informal survey on the town’s website to vote for the entrance sign they liked best.
Some 326 residents logged on to the website to pick their favourite sign.
Of those who voted, 176 supported option #1, 29 for option #2, 92 for option #3 and 9 for option #4.
“I talked to some of the staff and they let me know that this had the biggest public participation of any project that we’ve asked the residents to engage,” said mayor Dick Richards.
The news signs will be put up at the town’s entrances on Highways 56 and 12.
“Thank-You for Visiting Stettler!” will also be included on the back of each sign.
While the total cost for four signs is $108,050, Council voted to increase the budget to $110,000 to accommodate the total cost of the four signs and possible contingencies.
The entrance signs campaign has also given an idea to others. Stettler service organizations have approached councilor Leona Thorogood to update their two signs on Highway 56 and 12. Council voted to have more discussion on that subject.
Residents should see the new town entrance signs being put up in the following weeks.
Stettler and District Handibus Society
The Stettler and District Handibus Society wrote another letter to Council with their updated December 2010 budget sheet.
The new version included town and county funding as well as donations.
The society now says it had a $106,08 surplus as of December 31, 2010.
It received $15,790 from the town, $16,764 from the county and $31,310 in donations.
In the letter, the society said it had received a good response from its town businesses to their campaign to raise awareness on the issues facing the Handibus Society.
The society also invited Council to attend its next meeting on March 14.
