RCMP from Bashaw, Stettler and surrounding detachments worked diligently to inform residents and visitors to the summer villages of Rochon Sands and White Sands as well as others camping near Buffalo Lake of a weather event that was occurring Saturday, Sept. 2.

Very high winds caused concern to police.

Police asked campers and residents to seek shelter and get off the lake as quickly as possible late Saturday afternoon.

The public remained calm and cooperated with police direction and so far there have been no reports of injuries. There was extensive damage to property which will be assessed better in daylight hours.

Collisions

RCMP stated the high winds also contributed to a multi-vehicle collision, including an 18-wheeler, west of Buffalo Lake Saturday, Sept. 2.

Highway 53 between Bashaw and Highway 56 was impassable because of the collision and police asked travelers to avoid the area and take an alternate route.

According to media reports, the high wind caused a cloud of gas or dust to pass over the highway which contributed to several vehicles colliding.

No other information was available by press time.
