Proposed solar project planned near Stettler

There is a new energy project being proposed for the Stettler area.

A 34 MW solar and storage project has been proposed by ABO Wind Canada Ltd. on private land two kilometres southeast of the Town of Stettler.

Estimated to cost $160 million, the project is anticipated to add up to 25 MW of capacity to the Alberta electrical grid.

According to a document shared by the County of Stettler regarding the new project, it will displace 120,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, and 3.6 million tonnes of the 30 year anticipated life-expectancy of the project.

Key components of the project will include 72,000 solar-collection panels, each about 2 metres long and 1 metre wide, a ground-mounted rack system which will use a “single-axis tracking system” to allow the panels to follow the path of the sun, an inverter, transformer station, and a 16 MW battery able to store electricity in over-charge situations all connected to the grid via a nearby ATCO Electric substation.

The project, should it be allowed, will be required to be setback a minimum of 100 metres from any wetlands, as well as follow setback rules required for county roads and noise levels.

ABO Wind will be holding an open house in Stettler in February following its submission to Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA).

Following that, the tentative timeline has the development permit and Alberta Utilities Commission submissions being made in the second quarter of 2023 with approvals by the end of the year.

If all the approvals are granted, ABO Wind hopes to begin construction early in 2024 and be operation by the end of that year.

ABO Wind was founded in 1996 and has developed renewable energy projects around the world. For more information about this, and the companies other projects, check our www.abo-wind.com.
