Playground planned by Kinsmen near Stettler station

A new playground in the Town of Stettler will be going up later this summer in a park on the east side of town in partnership with Stettler Kinsmen Club.

A new playground in the Town of Stettler will be going up later this summer in a park on the east side of town in partnership with Stettler Kinsmen Club.

At its regular meeting April 20, town council approved a recommendation by Kinsmen to locate the playground at 4813 – 45 Street east of Stop and Go store and to maintain the park at 5020 – 43 Street as a grass park.

The playground structure will serve about 70 children under 10 years of age, states a letter to council from Werner Schicker, secretary for the club, and a member of the Kinsmen delegation that discussed the project.

“We feel the new location would serve a larger portion of the east-end population and be more accessible to a larger number of residents,” said Schicker.

Supporting the project with a Viking ship theme, council strongly endorses the location by the Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions.

“That would be a great location,” said Mayor Dick Richards.

“It’s a beautiful spot because it would serve not only residents but tourists from the train,” said Councillor Leona Thorogood.

The playground features various components to accommodate many ages and activities.

“We selected this because it can accommodate a wide range of ages and activities,” said Trevor Haustein, another member of the Kinsmen delegation.

“We want to break ground in August,” added Shamus Snowden, also a member.

Sports field rates

User fees for baseball diamonds and soccer pitches will rise six years after the last revision of policies regulating the use of those fields.

For these sports fields, adults pay 100 per cent while children and youth pay 50 per cent of budgeted expenses attributed to the group.

“The town strives to provide all facilities at no extra cost to taxpayers,” states the philosophy of facilities.

“This user-pay system has provided excellent facilities available to Stettler town and county users at reasonable rates.”

For ball diamonds, rates for this year have been set at $4,150 for Stettler Minor Baseball Association and $300 for adult teams.
