Opening Ceremonies
The Stettler Community Hall was filled near capacity on February 20th, to kick off the Opening Ceremonies for the 2018 Provincial Masters Curling Championships.
Eight men’s teams and seven ladies’ teams were in town to face-off against one another to see who’ll represent Alberta at the Masters National Championship in a few weeks.
The ceremonies honoured curlers who have representatived Stettler in the past, along with each of the Masters (60+) teams who were introduced alongside a photo on the wall to remind them of their home rink.
A bagpipe procession was then held to signify the start of the games led by members of the Stettler Legion and Stettler RCMP.
For his efforts in organizing the Masters event, Stettler Curling Club President Steve Gerlitz was also awarded a plaque from the Alberta Curling Federation.
Provincial Masters Championship
Five days of competition wrapped up for both the men’s and ladies’ teams at the Provincial Masters (60+) Curling Championships on Sunday.
Team Pendergast(Red Deer Curling Club) and Team Foster(Inglewood Curling Club) will represent Alberta at the 2018 National Masters Curling Championships after winning provincials in Stettler on the weekend.
The Men’s and Ladies’ National Masters(60+) will now be held in Surrey & White Rick, BC from April 1-8.

In the semifinals on Saturday, both of the eventual winners would await their final opponent.
It was Team Greening vs Team Armstrong to see who would play Team Pendergast in Sunday’s final on the men’s side. Team Greening of St. Albert would advance, losing out to Team Pendergast on Sunday.
Meantime, Team Fast and Team Salyn squared off to see who would face Team Foster for the ladies’ title. Team Salyn of the Calgary Winter Club-Springbank Curling Club advanced, falling in the end to Team Foster.
This was the first provincial curling tournament held in Stettler since the Safeway Select Men’s Provincials in 2001.
Stettler will also host the Jiffy Lube Alberta Scottie’s Tournament of Hearts happening January 23rd to the 27th in 2019.
