OCTOBER 2012: Thorogood, Spencer named Stettler’s citizens of the year

Stettler Regional Board of Trade and a community committee organized more than 25 events staged throughout the community during the weekend. Changes are already planned for next year.

 

Romar Power Sports of Stettler lost more than $20,000 after three recreational motorcycles, an all-terrain vehicle and a snowmobile were stolen in two separate break-ins at the shop.

 

Stettler and District Family and Community Support Services welcomed Wendy Rhyason of Donalda as the new executive-director. Rhyason brings to the job a wealth of experience in social services, counselling and administration.

 

With a long-term mandate to upgrade 20-year-old Stettler Recreation Centre, the town has contracted a consultant to draft design plans for the project, which is estimated at more than $1.5 million.

 

Small schools in Donalda, Byemoor and Brownfield were told they face the potential to close or be downsized as Clearview School Division trustee Peter Simons introduced a motion to study the future financial feasibility of the schools.

 

Town of Stettler Coun. Leona Thorogood was doubly honoured. She was named the female citizen of the year by the Stettler Regional Board of Trade, while she also received a Hal Rogers Fellow award presented by Kin Canada Foundation for Kinettes.

Rob Spencer was chosen as Stettler’s male citizen of the year for his leadership as chairman of Heartland Beautification Committee and Communities in Bloom.

 

A former Botha-area teenager, Paul Gabriel Bertin, was killed in a hit-and-run while walking near his Red Deer home.
