• Bylaws to allow auto recyclers proceed despite much opposition

Land-use and zoning bylaws to allow an auto recycling business to operate along Highway 56 on the northern gateway of the Town of Stettler remain on track despite opposition from Reeve Earl Marshall, two councillors, the Town of Stettler and several neighbouring property owners.

• Construction down in town, level in county

Construction in the Town of Stettler has significantly declined to $3,300,461 for the first half of this year, compared to $14,128,066 in the same period in 2009 while the County of Stettler has increased to $7,653,192, from $6,233,439 from last year.

• Prospects bleak for auto recycling business

Town of Stettler has resolved to protect the integrity of the intermunicipal development plan (IDP) with the County of Stettler by opposing an application by Jim Nibourg of East Central Auto Recyclers to locate on a new site on Highway 56 north of town although the town council, reeve and two councillors oppose the land-use bylaw that passed second reading.

Town of Stettler heard high remarks from Communities in Bloom judges who toured the town July 28 with winners of the national competition set for late October.

• Stettler wastewater facility expands to meet growth

Plans have been launched to upgrade the Town of Stettler wastewater treatment facility at a total cost of $2.6 million to meet the growing needs of the community with funding of $1.4 million from the Canada-Alberta Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

• Stettler Steel-Wheel Stampede raises country spirit

The second annual Stettler Steel-Wheel Stampede drew over 350 competitors, including about 100 local, and earned top reviews from competitors, organizers, local municipal councils and spectators as the weekend featured a Saturday night concert by award-winning Canadian country music star Gord Bamford.

• Repaving of Highway 12 complete

After seven weeks of work, repaving Highway 12 through the Town of Stettler was completed Aug. 23 with the project fully funded by the provincial government.

• Clearview supports funding for teachers

Clearview School Division is grateful that the provincial government will contribute about $500,000 to cover a provincial pay raise of 2.92 per cent although the government was reluctant earlier this year.

• Auto recycler still hopeful to relocate in Stettler

Stettler auto recycler James Nibourg plans to try again after municipal elections this fall after bylaws to allow him to relocate his business along Highway 56 just south of the Town of Stettler were defeated by the County of Stettler when final readings were a tie vote.

More space for Stettler Public Library, recycling and bylaw enforcement were the main issues election candidates for the Town of Stettler faced at an all-candidates forum that attracted about 110 people.

• Town mayor in, county reeve out

Dick Richards narrowly retained his seat as mayor of the Town of Stettler in municipal elections as he beat challenger Will Brown 689-662. County of Stettler Reeve Earl Marshall was unseated in the Warden division as James Nibourg led the way with 143 votes, followed by Marshall with 66 and Danny Riggins with 30.

• Five blooms again for Town of Stettler

Stettler and Heartland Beautification committee again received five blooms in the national Communities in Bloom and won the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association’s Landscape Award.

• County land-use bylaw goes to second public hearing

An updated land-use bylaw for the County of Stettler will go to a second public hearing next spring after four of the seven members of council are new and are required to be at a public hearing to vote on bylaws.

• Students win literary prizes

Botha School students Shayna Browe, Keyonna Derr, Megan Kobi, Danae Chostner and Sadie Diegel along with Olivia Clutterbuck and Kaitlin Poapst of William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler won top prizes in “Celebrating Words” literary contest sponsored by the English Language Arts Council of the Alberta Teachers’ Association.
