McDonald's closes old location, a year after new restaurant opens

Shoppers hoping to score a Big Mac and fries during their Walmart shopping experience will be disappointed from now on.

Shoppers hoping to score a Big Mac and fries during their Walmart shopping experience will be disappointed as the smaller McDonald’s restaurant has closed as of this past Sunday, Oct. 2.

The closure comes just a year and a month after the restaurant chain opened a new, independently housed restaurant across from Walmart on Highway 12, where franchise owner Gurpreet Takhar said he believed Stettler was robust enough to support the two locations.

When contacted for comment, Takhar declined to comment on the reasons for the closure of the Walmart McDonald’s, but did say the closure will not result in layoffs as staff will be transferred to the remaining restaurant.

It is still not certain what the plans are for the former McDonald’s restaurant space, but at present the store is waiting for direction from corporate headquarters, an employee stated. The employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as the employee had not been given authorization to speak to the media, said that for now, the space will be closed off and remain empty.
