Men between the ages of 40 and 80 can get a free PSA blood test to help detect early signs of prostate cancer.

The MAN VAN™ will be at the Stettler Sobeys on Saturday, April 7, between 11 am - 2 pm to offer baseline PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood tests. No appointment is necessary to stop by the 32 foot motor home that will be located in the parking lot.

Program Manager, Ken Rabb says, “When you come into the van, you’ll meet with one of our health care professionals who will draw about a half a teaspoon of blood out of your arm. Then we’ll send it back to our lab in Calgary at the Rockyview Hospital, and we’ll produce a PSA number for you.”

PSA is a protein produced by the prostate and released in small amounts to the bloodstream. The amount of PSA in the bloodstream can often predict a man’s risk of prostate cancer.

Ken Rabb says, “When guys hit about 40 years of age, they need to start thinking about it. We definitely want guys to talk to their doctor about this stuff.”

“If you see the MAN VAN and haven’t had a PSA blood test before, you should come out and see what we’re all about. It only takes a couple minutes, and we like to say it’s a blood test, not a glove test.”

According to the Prostate Cancer Centre, prostate cancer is the leading cancer in Albertan men, as one in seven will develop it in their lifetime. Approximately 2,600 men are diagnosed annually with prostate cancer and 8 men will die from it every week.

The Prostate Cancer Centre is a non-profit organization established in 1999 and focused on the early detection and treatment of prostate cancer and prostate related disease.
