Legion awards students for poster design and literary excellence

At a small ceremony held at the Stettler Legion Branch 59, students were awarded for poster design and literary competence on Monday evening, June 20.

"I'm extremely pleased with the variety of talent local students submit to the poster and literary contest each year at the time of Remembrance," said Rosalind LaRose, Alberta and Northwestern Territories District 4 Commander. "The dedication to our veterans, past and present, for their sacrifices is appreciated by youth during this contest and this is our way of teaching students the act of Remembrance."

The winners from the various categories were as follows:

Poster Colour – primary: Mya Prehn and Jayden Olafson, both from Stettler Elementary; junior: Megan Zimmer and Cassie Reene Smith, both students from Stettler Elementary; intermediate: Emily Dunn Jackson from Stettler Elementary.

Poster Black and White – primary: Isabella Urbina and Nathan Deaver, both from Stettler Elementary; junior: Jessica Turnbull and Koen Hagel, both from Stettler Elementary; intermediate: Dariel Pablo II Abando from Christ King.

Essays – primary: Taylor Paige and Ty Holden, from Stettler Elementary; senior: Lize-Marie Bouwer and Amanda O'Donnell, both from William E. Hay Stettler Secondary Campus.

Poems – junior: Quinn Pederson and Avery Olafson from Stettler Elementary; senior: Ania Bohn and Amanda O'Donnell, both from William E. Hay Stettler Secondary Campus.

The legion also handed a cheque of $17,353 to the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre, while Mitchell and Swaren presented a cheque of $25,000 from the Stettler Legion Branch 59 to LaRose for the Fort Mac Wildfire Relief funds.

According to LaRose, Alberta and Northwestern territories have raised $1.3 million for the Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief.
