Indoor sports facility still on town’s track

Plans to build another indoor sports facility in Stettler with community partners remain on track.

Plans to build another indoor sports facility in Stettler with community partners remain on track.

As a top priority for the Town of Stettler in its strategic planning, the facility is expected to be further discussed when the town meets with County of Stettler representatives July 18.

The project is said to be progressing, along with plans to update the Stettler Recreation Centre.

“It was also decided to hold an SRC updating meeting with county council to allow them to see first-hand the challenge facing a community with a 21-year-old building,” chief administrative officer Rob Stoutenberg told council at its regular meeting last week.

“We will have a walkthrough and then we can discuss moving forward with that project.”

Representatives of Clearview School Division are also planning to meet with the municipal partners in the coming months.

Steps to upgrade healthcare facilities at Stettler Hospital and Care Centre, attracting and retaining businesses and employees, and a seniors’ social centre, are the other top priorities in progress.

A proposal to establish Stettler Regional Health Services Advocacy Committee has become a top priority in an effort to lobby for action and funding from the provincial government and focus on local issues.

Representatives from the town and Stettler Regional Board of Trade and Community Development continue to consult with local physicians and health-care officials to recruit more physicians and set priorities for health-care services.

A long-term plan is also in the works to develop Stettler Health Centre to house physicians in a one-stop facility with extensive services.

On the business front, plans to attract a truck stop are in progress.

To attract more employees, a job fair for the region is being considered for next spring.

Stoutenberg noted that March and April are the best times to hold a job fair, because many employers are recruiting heavily at that time.

An oil and gas trade show is also being planned for next spring by the board of trade.
