Halkirk Elks host annual comedy night

Halkirk

Seafood lovers had the opportunity to get a taste of their favourite dishes at the annual Halkirk Elks Seafood and Comedy Night held on Feb. 8.

The event was another sell-out for the venerable organization.

Doors opened at 6 p.m., the program began at 7 p.m. with Elks member Doreen Blumhagen welcoming the crowd, introducing the servers, and recognizing some of the other nearby Elks clubs that had made the trip to help out.

Helping serve and clear tables were Grade 12 girls from Castor's Gus Wetter School, and Elks members from lodges in Heisler, Hanna and Red Deer were recognized.

The first course of the seafood supper was the always-popular homemade clam chowder, which began being served around 7:30 p.m.

Due to an issue with the ovens in the Halkirk Community Hall, the main course ended up being delayed a bit, but once it was finally served it consisted of a shrimp cocktail, poached cod with lemon dill sauce, and maple Baked wild sockeye salmon, along with roasted potatoes, salad, glazed carrots, coleslaw and a variety of cupcakes.

For the non-seafood inclined, the kitchen also served up roast beef.

The entertainment got started a little after 9 p.m.

Unlike previous years, where the Halkirk Elks brought in one comedian, for the 2025 edition of the Seafood and Comedy Night, the Elks were able to bring in a panel of five different acts hosted by Noah Brodeur.

The acts covered a variety of topics from dating to kids to speech impediments (their own) to catfishing a moose and comedians featured were Jenn Sakata, Rob Pepper, Ryan Short, and Brent Ayton.

With the increased number of acts, each comedian did a shorter set but the overall evening was longer with entertainment concluding around 11 p.m. and people beginning to drift out at that time once the silent auction bids were announced.

The annual seafood and comedy night is one of several major fundraisers hosted by the Halkirk Elks every year.
