The County of Stettler has received a Water for Life grant of up to more than $5 million to go toward the water line that leads to Big Valley.

The grant, which covers up to $5,685,361 or 90 per cent of the project, was approved by the provincial government on May 12.

“We’re doing the predesign and scheduling logistics right now,” said County of Stettler CAO Tim Fox. “We’re going to try to have the project planning phase done by the end of August.”

“In a perfect world, we’d like to get it at as soon as possible and stay ahead of the anticipated increase in cost for contractors as well,” said Fox.

Grant denied for Erskine reservoir

The County of Stettler has failed to obtain a provincial grant for the Erskine water reservoir.

The county applied for a grant under the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership program.

In council on June 22, when the grant rejection letter was presented, a motion was made to reapply for the grant, while keeping most of the application the same.

“We’re going to submit basically the same application (for the 2012 – 2013 grant), but we’re definitely going to point out the need for potable water in the area,” said Fox.

“We have some concerns that a lot of people in Erskine are on wells, including the schools, and we’re dedicated to making sure that they will have clean, safe water.”
