Fire hall, train station gain parking space

More parking will be available for Stettler fire hall and a neighbouring tourist attraction.

More parking will be available for Stettler fire hall and a neighbouring tourist attraction.

At its regular meeting in July, Town of Stettler council approved an application to subdivide land near the railway tracks to create more parking space for Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions and the Stettler fire hall.

Alberta Prairie will also transfer about .54 acres located behind the fire hall to the Town of Stettler.

New landscaping will be planted after several trees are removed to make way for more parking.

“I hate to see the trees removed, said Coun. Al Campbell.

However, the space will be spruced up, councillors were told at the meeting.

“Trees are in the way of Alberta Prairie and we’ll have a manicured level area,” chief administrative officer Rob Stoutenberg said.

“Alberta Prairie needs the parking.”

Small parcels of land will be swapped under the deal, as Alberta Prairie agreed to pay the town $27,000 on completion of the asphalt concrete paving on its parking lot.

Library board adds Leuck

Council appointed Vicki Leuck to the Stettler Public Library board as a member at large for one year.

“We had a position open and Vicki stepped up,” said Coun. Darcy Bachman, the town’s municipal representative on the board.

Meeting with county

Recreation funding and challenges were on the agenda when the town representatives met with the County of Stettler at the regular joint meeting July 29.

A regional collaboration grant, operations of the Stettler airport, recruiting physicians and physiotherapists, and a master servicing study were among the other topics under discussion.
