Every Jan. 27 is Family Literacy Day in Canada.

The day was created in 1999 by ABC Life Literacy Canada to promote the importance of reading as a family, as well as taking part in other literacy-related activities.

“Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well,” states the ABC Life Literacy Canada Familiy Literacy Day website.

The theme for 2022’s Family Literacy Day is “Learning in the Great Outdoors,” with families encouraged to get outside and explore the world around them.

To help with the planning for the day, the ABC Life Literacy website has an online activity guide and a sign up for a virtual event with Family Literacy Day chair Barbara Reid.

As usual, the Stettler Public Library will be participating in the event with activities planned during the day and a competition with other library’s across the province to become Alberta’s “most readerly community.”

All it takes to participate is reading for fifteen minutes with your little one, and then calling the library, commenting on their social media posts, or filling out the form on the Stettler Public Library website which will go live on Jan. 27, 2022.

According to library manager Rhonda O’Neill, anyone who participates will be entered into a raffle for a Stettler Public Library picnic blanket.

In partnership with the Stettler Family Resource Network, the Stettler Public Library will be hosting a family story time on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.

“This will be a relaxed story time, so bring the little ones in their (pajamas) — Stuffed animals are also welcome — ,” said O’Neill.

As an added bonus, the time spent at the story all gets added to the community readerly challenge.

More information can be found at the ABC Family Literacy website at www.abclifeliteracy.ca, or by calling the Stettler Public Library at 403-742-2292.

Any families planning on attending the story time at the library is asked to call the library to register as space is limited.
