The grey area of drone use propriety was highlighted earlier this month after a Stettler-area resident complained that someone had a drone hovering outside the window of their home.

The proliferation in use of drone technology, especially as the small aircrafts become less expensive, has left Stettler residents uncertain about how to file complaints about drone usage.

Stettler RCMP Sgt. Phil Penny said the only time police are involved in drone-related complaints is if the matter has turned criminal, as the regulations concerning the use of unmanned aerial vehicals (UAV) – a.k.a. drones – is set down by Transport Canada – not the criminal code.

Current regulations regarding the use of drones limit where and how the small aircrafts can be flown.

"Complaints (about drone usage) can be made to Transport Canada," Penny said.
