The driver of a car involved in a head-on collision with a semi-tractor trailer around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to the hospital in serious condition.

Bashaw RCMP responded to the collision on Highway 53 near Highway 56, west of Donalda. Stettler RCMP assisted Bashaw as the highway had to be closed while the driver was extracted and airlifted to the hospital. The highway was re-opened mid-afternoon.

According to a statement by Sgt. Phil Penny, detachment commander of the Stettler RCMP detachment, the Bashaw RCMP continue to gather information surrounding the cause of the collision.

"At this time, it's believed that alcohol was not a factor," he said.

The RCMP remind motorists to show care as the weather continues to improve and the volume of traffic on Alberta highways and roads increases.
