Second-generation Donalda cowboy Curtis Cassidy has added to his steer-wrestling winnings over the weekend.

Cassidy, the holder of a dozen Canadian titles and 21 Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) appearances in steer wrestling competed in both the Hand Hills Lake Stampede and the Bonnyville Pro Rodeo with combined winnings of over $3,000.

At the Hand Hills Lake Stampede, Cassidy ran a blistering 3.9 seconds on his second run which was good enough to take home $1,302.

Over at Bonnyville he ran a 5-second winning run which was good enough to add another $1,924 to his total.

“The drawing Gods have been on my side so far,” Cassidy chuckled, in a recent media release.

“I had the perfect draw at Hand Hills, just an excellent handling steer … Then at Bonnyville, I had one of the better ones in a herd of fresh, bigger steers. The steer braced up just a little on me and kind of hung up a bit or I could have been a short four.”

The weekend wins increased Cassidy’s standings on the top of the 2022 leaderboard.

“I’ve been on both ends of it, and being first is a lot nicer than being way back in the standings at this point in the season,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy acknowledged that he couldn’t have gotten to this point without Tyson, “the latest in the long line of brilliant Cassidy dogging horses.”

“The thing with Tyson is he’s just so user-friendly,” Cassidy continued, in the release.

“Anybody can get on him and have a chance to win.”

According to Cassidy, riding Tyson has allowed him to compete with the younger cowboys and with COVID restrictions being over and the major rodeos coming back could give him another shot at the CFR and the National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association has three upcoming Alberta stops, Brooks on June 10 and 11, and Rocky Mountain House and Lea Park on June 10-12.
