Overwhelming support – Former longtime Donalda-area man Steve Vikse

Over $30,000 was raised by the Donalda community to support a former longtime area resident suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Steve Vikse was very grateful for the support during a fundraiser barbecue and auction Sept. 11 at Donalda Community Hall.

“It’s overwhelming – I can’t believe how many people attended the event,” said Vikse, 45, who was diagnosed with MS in 2009 although he showed signs of the neurological disorder in 2001 and currently walks with the assistance of two canes.

“When you’re supported by loving and caring family and friends, life can’t be any better.”

“Support from residents and businesses has been overwhelming,” said Vikse, who now resides in Camrose.

Up to 250 people attended the event to support Vikse, said Joyce Bergquist, one of the lead organizers.

Funds will help him and his wife Krista travel to India where he will get treatment in the next few months.

“He needs $25,000 to $30,000 and the fundraiser exceeded that,” said Bergquist.

This will go a long way to help him cope with MS.

“The sooner you get this treatment, the better results you get from it,” said Vikse.

Growing up on the Vikse family farm about 10 miles north of Donalda, he was diagnosed with MS after be completed chemotherapy treatment for cancer three years ago.

“My legs are getting weaker,” said Vikse, who can still drive vehicle although his legs can fatigue over a period of using his legs.

Originally he was suspected of having MS in 2001 when he experienced blurred vision for one hour.

Now unable to work, he is still grateful for life despite the physical challenges.

“I count my blessing because there a lot more people worse with MS, “ said Vikse.

“You have to look at the positive side of life.”

“Keep smiling and enjoy every good moment of your life.”
