Daring attempts of theft and cases of vandalism signal increasing criminality

CHARGED

Police responded to a residence in the 5000 block of 50 Avenue in Stettler after receiving a report of a disturbance on June 8. 57-year-old Stettler resident, William Edwin Johnston was arrested at the scene. Subsequent investigation included a warrant to search the home. Johnston was remanded in custody and will next appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on June 16 to enter pleas to charges including assault, weapons and drug possession.

VANDALISM

On June 11, at about 11 p.m., a home along 2 Avenue in Big Valley was sprayed with paintball pellets.

A pump hose was cut causing residential flooding outside a home along Macrae Street in Erskine on June 12.

On June 15, a building and vehicle were spray-painted along Railway Avenue in Big Valley.

Two parked bulldozers were vandalized overnight in the northwest portion of the County of Stettler on June 13. Stereo equipment was also stolen from them.

THEFT

Between June 8 to 15, during the night, five vehicles in Stettler suffered damage during thefts or attempted thefts. Some vehicles had windows broken to gain entry while others had their locks damaged. Stolen property included CD player, iPod, GPS, and cash. These thefts occurred in the 5800 and 5900 block of 50A Avenue, 5700 block of 46 Avenue, 4600 block of 55 Street and 4800 block of 50 Street.

On June 12, a home owner in the 4000 block of 66 Street Close in Stettler chased off a lone male who was inside the home owner’s vehicle.

Campers at the Lions Campground in Stettler were victims to the theft of lawn chairs and other property on June 12.

On June 8, a Stettler gas station had fuel stolen when a driver in a blue truck filled his tank and left without paying.

Two trucks were stolen in Stettler and both were recovered in town a short time later. On June 10, a 2002 Dodge Ram was taken from a residence in the 5400 block of 50 Avenue and later located on June 11 along 55 Street. On June 13, a 2001 Dodge Ram was stolen from the 5000 block of 57 Street and located in the 5700 block of 41 Avenue.

On June 14, overnight, a large amount of copper cable was stolen from a truck parked at the Agriplex in Stettler.

A homemade green utility trailer containing items including a lawn mower and chainsaw was stolen June 12 from a gravel pit near Big Valley.
